We care for all God’s children, unconditionally. As a rural town community, the Parable of Jesus as the Good Shepherd (John 10:11) resonates with our children who feel valued and welcomed as individuals. All members of our school family, the community and the wider world are valued and respected.

Intent

Our primary school music intent statement within the Futura Learning Partnership is centered on cultivating a lifelong passion for music in every child. Our commitment is to provide students with enriching musical experiences and opportunities throughout their educational journey. Our ultimate goal is for each child to nurture a unique musical identity, whether as a performer, composer, or an active listener who will eventually contribute to the cultural fabric of the UK.

From Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) through Key Stages 1 and 2 (KS1 and KS2), music is an integral part of daily school life. Our music curriculum, aligned with the EYFS framework and National Curriculum, ensures that every child, from EYFS to Year 6, enjoys a dynamic, hands-on, and comprehensive musical education encompassing singing, performing, composing, and attentive listening.

In addition to formal classroom instruction, we actively encourage students to explore their musical interests and talents through various extracurricular activities, both within and outside school. As a result, students not only develop their musical skills but also expand their cultural horizons.

Our unwavering commitment is to make music an engaging and fulfilling subject for all students. We instill in them the discipline of practice, the thrill of musical analysis, and the joy of creating and discovering their own musical voices. Through our music program, we hope to ignite a lifelong love for music in every child and empower them to become active participants in the vibrant cultural life of the UK.

Implementation

We achieve this through:

• Starting in the Early Years and KS1, where children are introduced to music through songs,
• A curriculum which progressively builds pupils’ musical understanding through weekly lessons
• Focusing on singing, performing, composing, and attentive listening
• Exploring a diverse range of music genres and tuned or untuned instruments
• Actively engaging children through the use of games, songs and interactive learning
• An adaptive teaching and scaffolded approach during lessons to ensure all learners achieve
• Ensuring all staff have strong subject knowledge and can access support where necessary
• Holding Music events across the year to promote and explore music in a range of contexts

Impact

The impact of our curriculum is that pupils have an increased enjoyment and understanding of different musical skills, as well as gaining knowledge which is transferrable to the next stage of their education. Pupils will progress throughout the musical curriculum in primary education, laying the foundations for further musical teaching at key stage 3.
